The Defenders: They’re still a thing

Remember when Marvel and Netflix decided to team up to bring back “street-level” superheroes to the small screen. They said that the big plan was eventually to have Daredevil, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist join forces and form the Defenders. No.. you don’t remember. That’s okay until recently Marvel and Netflix seem to have forgotten too. But now we’re finally starting to get some news and rumors surrounding the long awaited team up.

What’s taking so long?

If we want to place the “blame” on anything for why we’ve had to wait this long for The Defenders to finally come, look no further than the show that started it all, Daredevil. It would be fair to say that coming off the 2003 Ben Affleck film that Marvel and Netflix probably didn’t expect the Daredevil series to be as popular as it ended up being. A lot of credit should be given to Charlie Cox, whose portrayal of Matt Murdoch has been amazing as well as Vincent D’Onofrio’s Wilson Fisk (aka Kingpin). The addition of Jon Bernthal as Frank Castle in season 2 put serious doubts, in at least my mind, that we’d ever actually see a Defenders show. Bernthal was so good that the Punisher will be getting his own series in 2017.

Then there was Jessica Jones. . . Say what you will. I personally liked it. I thought that they did the best with the material they had to work with and the characters that they could use. It wasn’t nearly as good as Daredevil, but it did a nice job of introducing Luke Cage and apparently it was good enough to get an order for a second season. Speaking of Luke Cage, the first season was amazing and actually got moved into production ahead of the originally planned Iron Fist after Luke Cage was so well received in Jessica Jones. Mike Colter has been amazing in developing a character that many “mainstream” comic fans may not have been all that aware of before the series. As a fan of the Power Man comics I liked the subtle nods the show made to the comics. It too has been picked up for a second season.

Where we’re at now

Don’t hold your breath is all I can say. We still have Iron Fist which is set to debut in March before we can even start thinking about the Defenders. Finn Jones will play Danny Rand as he tries to balance regaining his family’s company after being gone for 15 years and performing his duties as Iron Fist. We know that Carrie-Anne Moss will return as the lawyer Jeri Hogarth, from Jessica Jones, Rosario Dawson will once again appear as Claire Temple (Night Nurse) and Wai Ching Ho will reprise her role as Madam Gao from the first season of Daredevil. It’s almost a certainty that Matt Murdoch, Luke Cage and/or Jessica Jones will also pop up as a way to bridge the characters together, although Claire Temple seems to be the glue that is holding the Netflix shows together.

Once Iron Fist wraps up, everyone, and I do mean everyone will be back for the 8 episode first season of The Defenders. We’re talking Karen Page, Foggy, Stick, Electra, Misty Knight, Claire Temple, Trish Walker, etc. basically every supporting character from the 4 solo series. Sigourney Weaver will play the main “bad guy” Alexandra. No idea if they decided to adapt a character from the comics or create a new villain for the show but should be interesting. We still don’t have a release date for The Defenders, but according to sources it should be mid-2017, whatever that means. It also should be noted that there is a really good chance that they could re-shoot/rework things based on how well Iron Fist does so I’m expecting The Defenders to come out later rather than sooner.

That’s it. You excited? What’s been your favorite of the solo series so far? Let us know in the comments.
